Permissions on the MSI Agent Installer and Install Point

To install and run the installation (.msi) file, the user who launches the installer must have proper permissions:

  • Permission to run the Agent MSI file, and
  • Permission to access the file system on the installation target.

Permission to run the Agent installer (.msi) file

To determine whether you have permission to run the installer, right-click on the .msi file and click Properties. Go to the Security tab and confirm that the user is listed among the Group or user names.

If you do not have permission to run the installer (.msi) file, you will recieve an error message when you attempt to run it. If you are attempting to run from the command prompt, you will see a simple "access is denied" message:

If you are attempting to run the installer by double-clicking on the MSI file itself, or by using the Run command, you receive a Windows error message:

To solve the problem, the user who is attempting to run the installer file must be added to a security group that has administrator access, allowing Full control.

Full-control access to the system account

In the case where there is not sufficient permission to access the system account, you must grant full control to the user running the installer.

To address the problem, right-click on the MSI file and then click Properties. In the Propertiesdialog box, select the Security tab and ensure that "SYSTEM" permissions are set to allow Full control.

The screen shot shows us that the System account does not have permission to access the resource.
