​​​Office 365 Group to Office 365 Group Mailbox (Conversations) Migration Guide

Important: When you sign in to MigrationWiz, you are redirected to the Getting Started page in MSPComplete. To get to a migration project created before April 4, 2017, click the Go to Projects button on the Getting Started Page. To create a new project for the migration scenario documented in this article, click the waffle icon (waffle.png) in the top navigation bar of MSPComplete, and select the appropriate migration product.

Introduction

  • This is the complete onboarding task flow to migrate conversations from one Office 365 tenant to another Office 365 tenant.
  • Complete each step in order. Links to corresponding Knowledge Base articles are included.
  • Important:
    • Some group conversations might not be nested at the Destination.
    • The group OneNote notebook is not migrated.

Prepare the Source Environment

  1. Create an administrator account in Office 365 to be used for the migration, or use the global admin account for the tenant. KB004948
  2. Add the migration administrator account as an owner and a member of the Source group. Read the Manage Group membership in the Office 365 admin center article from Microsoft to learn more.
  3. Make note of the owners and members of the group. You will need this information later when replicating the membership of the Source group at the Destination group.

Prepare the Destination Environment

  1. Create an administrator account in Office 365 to be used for the migration, or use the global admin account for the tenant. KB004948
  2. Create the Office 365 Group, if it doesn't already exist. Read the Create and navigate a group article from Microsoft to learn more.
  3. Add the migration administrator account as an owner and a member of the Destination group. Read the Manage Group membership in the Office 365 admin center article from Microsoft to learn more.
  4. Add other owners and members to the group to replicate the membership of the Source group.

MSPComplete Steps

  1. Create the customer. KB005421
  2. Create the Source and Destination endpoints. KB005427
    • For the Source endpoint:
      • Click Endpoints > click Add Endpoint > enter endpoint name > select Office 365 Groups for endpoint type.
      • Enter the URL of the group's document library into the URL field. KB005831
      • Enter the admin account credentials. Note: This should be a global admin account. If creating a separate admin account for the purpose of migration, refer to the Office 365 section in KB004725.
    • For the Destination endpoint:
      • Click Endpoints > click Add Endpoint > enter endpoint name > select Office 365 Groups for endpoint type.
      • Enter the URL of the group's document library into the URL field. KB005831
      • Enter the admin account credentials. Note: This should be a global admin account. If creating a separate admin account for the purpose of migration, refer to the Office 365 section in KB004725.
  3. Purchase licenses. From your MSPComplete dashboard, click Purchase > click Mailbox Migration > select MigrationWiz-Mailbox, and enter the number of licenses you wish to purchase. Note: Check to see if there are bundles available for discounts (e.g., MigrationWiz mailbox and document bundle). KB004647

MigrationWiz Steps

  1. Create the mailbox migration project > select the customer > select the Source endpoint (Office 365 Group) > select the Destination endpoint (Office 365 Group). KB004380
  2. Add the Source and Destination group email addresses. KB004842
  3. Set the Project Advanced Options. KB004834
    • Under Support/Support Options add:
      • RecipientMapping="@old-domain.com->@new-domain.com" - This performs a find and replace that updates email addresses from one domain name to another. Use this support option when migrating mailboxes from an old domain name to a new domain name. KB005150
  4. Run verify credentials. KB004511
  5. Notify users that a migration is occurring. Send email to all users telling them the time and date of the migration.
  6. Perform a full migration pass. Select the users > from the top navigation, click Start from the top, and select Full Migration > click Start Migration. KB004938
    • Under the Select what to migrate section, ensure that only "Mail" is selected before starting the migration.
  7. Click the pie chart icon in the MigrationWiz dashboard to receive an email containing all the project migration statistics. KB004626
