How is the modify date calculated?

Answer:

When performing a migration based on date filters, MigrationWiz migrates items based on the modify date, not the creation date.

Calculation of the modify date is dependent on the Source environment. It is based either on the received date, or the date that the item was last modified (last modified date).

This article addresses the following:

  • How are the received date and the last modified date defined?
  • How are date filters set?
  • In MigrationWiz, which Source environments base their date filters on the received date, and which base their date filters on the modify date?

How are the received date and the last modified date defined?

  • Received date:

The received date is the date that an item was actually received. If modifications are made after the received date, the date filters are still based on the received date, not the last modified date.

Here are some example of received dates:

  • A mail item is sent to someone either internally or from an external source. The received date will equal the date that this item was received into the mailbox on the email server.
  • A meeting series was set up, with several users as invitees. The received data is the date that the series was set up. Even if changes are made to the series at a later time, the received date does not change.

  • Last modified date:

The modify date of an item is changed when any modification is made to the item.

Some examples of modifications:

  • If any text is changed in an item, then the modify date will be the date that the text was changed.
  • If the status of an item changes from unread to read, then the modify date will be the date that the status changed to read.
  • If an item is marked with a flag status, then the modify date will be the date that the item was flagged.
  • If an item is restored from backup, then the modify date will be the date of the item restoration.
  • If an item is moved to another folder, then the modify date will be the date of the item move.

When performing a migration based on date filters, MigrationWiz migrates items based on the modify date, not the creation date. This distinction is important, because sometimes there is confusion when a user creates an item on an earlier date, but then the modify date is changed due to actions similar to the examples listed above, and the user then expects the item to be migrated during a pass, based on the creation date.

 How are date filters set?

Date filters can be set by either of these two methods:

  • Under the MigrationWiz project Advanced Options, within the Filtering section.

  • During a Pre-Stage Migration pass. When performing a Pre-Stage Migration pass, there is a field labeled "Migrate items whose modify date is older than". When clicking on the drop-down field labeled "Select One", the resulting drop-down list provides options to migrate items older than the last modified date.

Note: If date filters are set under MigrationWiz project Advanced Options, and a Pre-stage pass is performed, then MigrationWiz will perform the Pre-stage pass based on the modify date that is set within the Pre-Stage pass field, not based on the date filters that are set under the project Advanced Options (although those project Advanced Option date filters will be used during Delta migrations, when performing the Full migration pass, if they remain set).
